Paranormal in the Media
Over recent years the paranormal has become very much popular thanks to programmes such as Most Haunted, Jane Goldman Investigates, Derek Acorah’s Ghost towns and many more. Also I have noticed many more newspaper articles and magazines detailing paranormal subjects in their articles. Many national newspapers and magazines have “Psychic lines” advertised in the back pages. On the face of it, this all looks very encouraging because it is making the paranormal wider known as a serious discussion subject. However, if we look more closely; it is in fact also doing just as much harm as it is good.
I have recently looked at the internet and decided to do a search for paranormal research groups and haunted locations. I first typed in “Paranormal research teams” into the search engine. I got something like 10.0000 search results. This is of course world wide, but I wondered to myself, if I had typed this in before this popular phase, how many results would I have got?
I think that because of this explosion in popularity, many people have seen these TV programmes and decided to set up their own teams. A lot of these teams have based their research methods on what they have seen on the television. Most of what they have seen on TV has been edited and this will greatly effect the accuracy of the information these teams are using. This is also the same with equipment. How many people on these teams actually know how to use their EMF meters properly and properly understand the readings they receive. I once saw someone getting rather excited and a little un-nerved that they were getting exceptionally high readings on their EMF meter, when they were stood by an electrical appliance. I straight away informed them that the electricity was effecting their EMF meter and giving the high reading. They argued against this so I took it off them and held it next to the appliance in question. The EMF meter went off the scale and proved me right. I explained to them that the Meters pick up on electricity and they had no knowledge of this.
Then we have to look at locations. I have approached many locations that have been featured on Most Haunted. I was asked to pay up to a Thousand pounds at one location and two hundred and fifty pounds at another. These location owners have found a nice easy way of making money from charging quite ridiculous amounts of money for groups to carry out investigations. A lot of these new teams that really are in it for the paranormal research and not to get a thrill, just cannot afford this kind of price. This will effect the investigative community in the long run.
I have made numerous inquiries in to courses in Parapsychology. Parapsychology is the scientific study of paranormal based subjects, including Out of Body Experiences, Near Death Experiences, ESP, Telepathy, Psychics and mediumship, Paramusicology, Ganzfeld any many more such subjects. I have read vast papers on these subjects and always try to investigate any paranormal subject from a scientific and un-bias approach or point of view.
I only hope that this popular phase is short lived and that these groups who are simply out for a thrill and who give the serious teams a bad name end soon, and locations who think they can charge the earth are again inviting investigators in. It is definitely apparent to me that popularity can sometimes ruin things for those who really wish to do seriously.
Paranormal tours will also charge vast amounts of money to take people on holiday to haunted locations. This also means that so many of the classic haunted locations such as Derby Gaol, Tutbury Castle, Borley, and many others are being investigated on a weekly bases, and being run into the ground. The people of Borley do not want people walking around the front of their houses and in the churchyard all night. There is nothing left at Borley to investigate anyway, so it is a waste of time for groups to go here anyway. If they do decide to attend a place such as Borley, they face the risk of being moved on by the police or even arrested.
Paranormal teams are outnumbering the number of well known locations that this has become a very competitive job to secure a location in the first place. This highlights another great problem that could see the investigative community imploding in a worse case scenario.

I agree with you both it does seem a sthough the parnaormal is the in thing at the moment. When i first started going to spiritualist church about 15 years ago i kept it hush as a lot of people i spoke to felt it was dealing with the unkown and the devil
Also it was dabbling with things left alone
