Ghosts
Some Important questions

Over 1000’s of years many millions of people from all classes, professions and all walks of life have reported seeing what they would call a ghost. There are TV programmes about them; there are dedicated teams of people and individuals that dedicate their whole lives to try and establish if ghosts do exist and what they are.
There are so many different ideas of what ghosts are and all of them depend almost entirely on your own personal belief system. Some religions are taught to believe in Reincarnation, others are taught to believe in Heaven and Hell. Others are even taught that there can be no such things as ghosts, and also Demons, such as Devils, like in the exorcist.

So, the questions

1) Do ghosts Exist?

If you look at all the collective evidence over the past one hundred years, with the increase in technological equipment. There is still being evidence presented to the scientific community that really proves ghosts exist. However, if you look at all the eyewitness statements and photographic evidence, and also some video footage. There is some photographs and video footage that has been around for quite a while and is yet to be explained satisfactorily to even some scientists.

2) What are ghosts?

No one knows. Not yet anyway. At the moment it comes down to what you believe, but can what you believe increase your chances of seeing ghosts or experiencing paranormal phenomena? This is another question that I should really look at later in this paper, so I’m going too. However, this does still leave the Do Ghosts Exist question still unanswered. How can you answer a question that (as yet) has no answer?
Maybe one of these thousands of millions of people who are actively investigating the paranormal, either as an amateur or a fully blown Parapsychologist may come up with an answer that is true and pleases people of all race and religions. This is yet to happen though.

3) How can paranormal phenomena be explained away?

Lots of people are actively trying to convince people that ghosts really don’t exist. These people as we all know are Sceptics. Again, this is a belief of theirs and falls under the belief category. There have been lots of misreports of paranormal phenomena and I have seen a lot of this myself on investigations. Many of the people that do the misreporting are often very new to the field and rather excited. In this case they know what they are out to do and know that the location they are in is reputed to be haunted. This is called Autosuggestion and is actually quiet common to the experienced investigator and easy to spot. In this situation when a new person is present and the location is in dark and silent state (as they often are for some reason), even the smallest sound can be magnified to sound like something significant. On only my second investigation, I heard what could be a rather spooky sound of something dragging. It was silent and this sound seemed very loud. It actually turned out to be a discarded crisp packet. I have seen several people who would have ran a mile at the first sound of this and therefore would have misreported it being paranormal. I kept my head and although felt a little scared at the time, when I found the cause, I felt relieved and realised that nothing paranormal had taken place.
Sensory Deprivation is also something that can have an adverse effect on an investigation. This is where the eyes or the ears, or even your sense of smell can play tricks on you. It’s basically when you are in a dark room or somewhere very quiet, if your eyes and your ears are not picking anything up or seem like they are not being used, your eyes and ears will make and send false messages to your brain. This will be in the form of imaginary sounds or visions. How many times have you been in the dark and thought you have seen something, only to turn on the light and find nothing actually there or it was indeed just a silly shape cast by something that has been there for years. This is all caused by sensory Deprivation.

On some occasions there will videoed or recorded sounds of footsteps or something moving. This evidence will then be very severely scrutinised and examined from all angles and be subjected to all kinds of technology. Even after all of this, this evidence cannot be explained away. Then this is very good news for paranormal investigators and believers

4) If ghosts are not really dead people, what are mediums and psychics?

Only they can answer that. SOME, not all and most definitely NOT I will say they are fakes and fraudsters. Why not me, first; because some of my best friends are mediums and I know they wouldn’t lie to me and I would not accuse them of lying to me, or support the notion that they are. This will be very rude of anyone to do. Again it comes down to the individual’s belief system. Spiritualists believe very heavily in psychic ability. I have seen things and heard psychics come out with facts that they could not have known. They are getting this information from somewhere. I have seen mediums do readings for people who they have never even met before that live in other countries. This can be done from something as simple as a photograph (cold reading with an absent sitter) or even from an object or family heirloom (Psychometry). In the case I explain, I witnessed a medium who I know well do a reading from a photograph that seemed to show a photographic anomaly called an orb. He related to me what he picked up and I related this information back to the person in question via e-mail. The two parties never even spoke a word to each other and yet the medium was 80% right. TThe information astounded both me and the absent sitter who was absolutely amazed by the information given. This me was good enough evidence to prove this medium is genuine. However, under parapsychological conditions these results would need to be repeated numerous times under laboratory conditions.
I do believe that there are some fraudsters out there, it’s a painful truth that people will prey on grieving people and take their money to feed them back a load of old rubbish. The psychics had a major famous stage first in Victorian times (when the Ouija Board came into heavy circulation) and just after the First World War. So many families lost loved ones during that dreadful 5 years and many fathers, brothers, sons and granddads, cousins and friends were killed. This left thousands of grieving relatives, desperate for news of their loved ones who were snatched so suddenly from them. Mediums offered the link between living and dead, and while their were some genuine mediums around, there were also many frauds. These callas fraudsters would be very good at sounding believable and some would read body language of the sitter as a guide. They would notice subtle body language changes and this would hint if they were right or wrong, this in turn helped them to give a seemingly accurate reading.

5) How can your beliefs give you more chance of seeing Ghosts?

If you believe in something, this already gives you more chance of seeing it, after all; how can you see something that doesn’t exist? You can’t unless it is done by special effects in a Hollywood Blockbuster. This is known to take place at some paranormal locations and some places are rigged to make you believe in ghosts or believe that you have experienced the paranormal. These are mostly just tourist attractions and are set up to make money. Any serious or half decent paranormal investigator would be able to tell these types of places a mile off.
I suppose the answer to the above question again falls into beliefs (Well it obviously does, due to the nature of the question), so autosuggestion (as described above) could be a factor. One in many even, not all factors can be known until the whole human brain can be understood, and it is yet to be fully understood.

6) Can ghosts all be in your head?

Anything can be in your head (so to speak), if you give a thought to any one subject, then it is in your head. But how can a ghost be in your head? The first answer I would pose to the reader is Dreams. Dreams are a very strange thing and can feel so convincing that you will actually act on them when you wake, still without knowing it was a dream. This can be so in a case of an apparition sighting. If you lose someone very close to you, they will without question be heavily on your mind. If you are pinning for them and very sad at their loss, you may well dream about them. These dreams can seem so very real, and even convince some people that they have indeed seen the ghost of Auntie Eileen at the end of their bed. I suppose this could be called Subconscious suggestion.
Again, if you are told several stories of paranormal and spooky happenings occurring in a location you live in or are staying in on holiday. This can induce auto suggestion. If you hear a story about a ghost that stands by the chair in your bedroom and this story plays on your mind. You may even think you are seeing the same thing as what other people have been telling you about. You think you are seeing it, although it’s not actually there. Its your over active imagination manifesting, and therefore, in your head.

The idea of this paper was to give the reader an insight into some of the explanations and arguments for and against the theory or beliefs of what ghosts actually are. The whole truth is we still don’t know. So for now it’s up to you to make up your own mind with the evidence suggested above and your individual belief system.
