Does anyone have any info on this old WW1/WW2 airfield and whether any of it actually exists anymore. It was only by chance that me and Gary were driving past a road in Detling called Aerodrome Road recently, and he mentioned there must have been an airfield there at sometime.
Funnily enough, I have a book at home I recently got from the library about Kent Airfields and there is a little about it in there, but not much.
Does any of it still exist now?

re detling airfield
started as a civil airfield and taken over by the raf in 1937 -1938 for no.16 group coastal command the resident squadron was no.500.this was an auxiliary squadron and was equipped with avro ansons used for protection of convoys and reconnaissance .
detling was heavily bombed in 1940 with the loss of personnel and aircraft on the ground .
nothing remains of the airfield today apart from some pilboxes and the site has been taken over by the kent county showground and an industral estate.
there is a memorial in detling village . |

I did wonder if the showground was part of the airfield because of the roadways along it. _________________ No amount of money can buy true love!

Check out the OS Map (explorer series) for that area - you will see if the trackways you`ve seen are similiar to the taxiways and runways then of RAF or USAF bases. Normally they follow a triangular pattern with three runways crossing each other or forming the sides.
